Social Media for Veterinarians: 1,000 Fans Milestone

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

This week, Broad Ripple Animal Clinic and Wellness Center reached a milestone with their social media program: the clinic surpassed 1,000 total Fans on Facebook! In just a little over a year since we launched our practice’s Facebook page, with a lot of diligence we were able to grow our audience to more than 1,000 people. Why is this important?

  • We are able to reach more people, through their preferred method of communication: their personal Facebook news feed
  • We can alert more than 1,000 people to breaking pet news in moments
  • We can feature links to new blog posts or clinic “news” in a friendly, non-invasive manner
  • We can interact on a more personal level with our clients once they leave the walls of our practice
  • More clients can recommend our practice to their friends via Facebook, the fastest growing Internet site in history

In a continued effort to keep veterinary practices informed, I am posting the most recent demographic data from Broad Ripple Animal Clinic and Wellness Center’s Facebook page:

  • 78% of BRACpet’s total Fans are women.
  • 98% of the people who interact with the clinic on Facebook are women.
  • The men who make up the 2% of people who interact with us, are all in the 25-34 age range.

Of the 98% women who interact with our clinic on Facebook, their age ranges break down as follows:

  • 2% are 18-24
  • 28% are 25-34
  • 32% are 35-44
  • 23% are 45-54
  • 13% are 55+

Our total Fan base age range breaks down in the following segments:

  • 2% are 13-17
  • 20% are 18-24
  • 33% are 25-34
  • 22% are 35-44
  • 13% are 45-54
  • 9% are 55+

What can you do with this information? You can use it to shape posts on your own clinic Facebook pages. Are you writing posts that appeal to your audience? Are you creating posts that inspire your Fans to interact with you? If you aren’t getting many new Fans, or aren’t getting interactions, then chances are you aren’t hitting your target audience. Get outside your own frame of mind and write posts that appeal to your audience: women who are ages 25-54!

Great info and congrats! How did you achieve this? How did you alert clients to this and get them to follow/like?

    As always – you rock!

I’d also like to know how to approached clients to like your page. We’ve got about 125, but it’s been a very slow process.
